Men’s Hat Trends: Autumn/Winter 2019

November 12, 2018 - By Emily Potter

Welcome to hats for men, the second article in the Autumn/Winter 2019 style series.

This season, there are three overarching trends.

The first style for the A/W ’19 season is full of radical self-expression through bold fabrics, metallic, glitter, sequins, etc.

The next trend consists of a daring color palette inspired by nature with chunky details and trims.

The final style focuses on sustainability with recycled materials and vintage looks updated for the 21st century.

Check out our blog from last week where we covered women’s styles. In the coming weeks, we will go over youth trends and athleisure styles, so stay tuned.

It’s not too late to review and prepare for the Spring/Summer 2019 hats for men as well.

Hats for MenStyle and Personality

Hats for men will include a lot of thick, durable fabrics like denim, corduroy, wool, nylon, and suede. You’ll see a lot of different shapes including trucker hats, sun-protection styles, unstructured 5-panels, and camper caps.

Heathered fabrics, poms, stripes, and Navajo patterns are popular in this market. We’re also seeing beanies with visors and unique art placement.

This season is all about coastal, salt-water fishing. You’ll see detailed illustrations and fish graphics, heavy washes, bright accents, and sublimated scenes.

The hunting market is all about fractal disruption patterns and vintage camo. Military styles hook/loop patches are popular as well as rip-stop fabrics and buttonless caps.

Surf and Skate

Flat bill hats will still dominate this market. You can expect a lot of performance fabrics, vintage looks, detailed illustrations, hand-drawn type, tie-dyes, and florals.

Old School

Browns, olives, and other earth tones will work as the base for a substantial portion of products. This style focuses on quality craftsmanship and functional, weathered hats for men.

You’ll see textured fabrics and patches that reflect the outdoor lifestyle and work to promote outdoor recreation.

The Americana trend is very prominent in hats for men. This season, you can expect distressed and tonal styles. We’re mostly seeing the flag used as an all over pattern or in the shape of the cap’s design or logo.

Hats for MenDecoration Elements

The graphics are predominately single-line, hand-drawn illustrations. There is a lot of simple, clean designs and detailed nature scenery. Many graphics are based around the typography.

Prints and Patterns

Men are embracing florals and other bright geometric patterns, dyes, stripes, and plaids. Generic camouflage, distressed prints, and nature looks remain popular.

Trim and Details

This season, the focus is on small decoration elements that give hats for men a high-end retail look. You can expect things like quilting, perforation, metal accents, and unique closures. We’re also seeing unique art placement, especially under the visor, and patches are everywhere.

Keep checking back every Monday! Next week we’ll cover youth hat trends followed by athleisure wear. Let us know what you think about the hats for men in the comments below.
