Men’s Hat Trends: Spring/Summer 2019

June 11, 2018 - By Emily Potter

Welcome to the second article in the Spring/Summer 2019 style series covering men’s caps.

This season, there are three overarching trends.

The first style for the S/S ’19 season is full of earth tones inspired by natural elements like stone, marble, and water.

The next trend consists of bright, primary colors with military muses, glitter, and a touch of the 1980s.

The final style focuses on pastel hues with iridescent and rainbow finishes that create a mood enhancing response.

Check out our blog from last week where we covered women’s styles. In the coming weeks, we will go over youth trends and athleisure styles, so stay tuned.

It’s not too late to review and prepare for Autumn/Winter 2018 as well.

Men’s Caps: Style and Personality

For this season, men’s caps will include a lot of unconventional fabrics like denim, corduroy, nylon, suede, leather, and full mesh looks.

You’ll see patterns like gingham check, herringbone, marbled prints, and generic camouflage. You can also expect unique decoration elements like woodgrain finishes and gold hardware.

Outdoorsy

As the weather heats up, so do fishing trends; and this year, it’s all about coastal, salt water fishing. We’re seeing a lot of brightly colored sublimated sea styles and detailed fish illustrations.

Mossy Oak Realtree, and Kryptek, have all released coastal fishing camo prints, and those are quickly catching on. Catching…see what I did there?

Surf and Skate

Flat bill hats will still dominate this market, but dad hats are making significant headway, as well as unstructured 5 panels, which is not a shape you see a lot of, normally. You can expect a lot of West Coast trends, tie-dye and other all-over prints and bright, beachy colors.

Old School

Browns, olives, and other earth tones will work as the base for a substantial portion of products. This style focuses on quality craftsmanship and durable, weathered men’s caps.

You’ll see textured fabrics and patches that reflect the outdoor lifestyle and work to promote recreational activities like camping and kayaking.

Americana

The Americana trend is very prominent in men’s caps. The summer months are home to both Memorial Day and Independence Day, so consumers want to show their patriotism. This season, you can expect flag patches and imagery with bright reds and blues.

Alternatively, there will also be a lot of tonal black and grey looks as well as gradients and heavy washes.Men's Caps

Men’s Caps: Decoration Elements

Graphics

The graphics are predominately single-line hand-drawn illustrations. There is a lot of thick-lined imagery and detailed nature scenery. Fish, bears, and mountain ranges are common motifs.

Prints and Patterns

Men are embracing florals and other all-over prints this season. Plaids, tie-dyes, geometric patterns, digital and generic camo patterns remain popular.

Trim and Details

This season, the focus is on small decoration elements that give men’s caps a high-end retail look. You can expect things like quilting, zippers, reflective accents, branded closures, leather and silicone patches

Keep checking back every Monday! Next week we’ll cover youth hat trends followed by athleisure wear. Let us know what you think about the men’s caps in the comments below.
